Making an Impact
Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Montana Leadership View
Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Montana (BCBSMT) has a storied history of protecting members and helping them be at their best.
And as a company, we take a broad approach to making a positive impact for our members and the communities where they live, work and play. We're part of these communities, too.
If you volunteer at a school, a food pantry or another community organization, some of our employees in their blue shirts are likely to be working by your side.
And our commitment is bigger than providing financial support to nonprofits and logging service hours, because health insurance and health care are unaffordable for many households.
We want to get at the real causes of these costs by helping make communities healthier.
Many things outside the scope of health care – such as lack of access to food, housing and transportation – play a big role in a person's ability to attain a healthy lifestyle. They may also add to medical costs that place a financial burden on households and businesses.
We're continuing to build our network of community partners to help bridge these gaps, so we can provide peace of mind and empower whole-person health.
Here's a look at some of the initiatives and programs we are especially proud of:
- Combating the Opioid Crisis: Across Montana, communities are coming together to confront the crisis of opioid misuse and addiction that's disrupting and cutting short too many lives. BCBSMT is taking this crisis and our role in addressing it seriously. We're working with our community partners, medical providers and state agencies to improve the way we prevent and treat substance abuse in Montana. Our newly launched Big Blue Sky InitiativeSM is a multiyear educational campaign to raise awareness that there is hope and help available to recover from addiction and mental illness.
- Implementing Value-Based Care: BCBSMT's value-based care initiative is changing the way health care is delivered in Montana. We are reorganizing care around the delivery of health, rather than health care. Simply put, this means paying for quality instead of quantity. This includes avoiding unnecessary services, helping providers shorten wait times and spend more time with patients, and reaching out to make sure patients have received recommended preventive screenings.
- Showing the Value of Being Local: Our Health Care Management team in Helena works and listens to providers across Montana, ensuring the needs of our members are met. This has resulted in cost savings, improved member experiences and enhanced relationships.
- Investing in the Communities We Serve: We care about Montana. BCBSMT annually invests in Montana communities through grants, sponsorships and outreach activities. This includes four $50,000 Healthy Kids, Healthy Families® grants, a fifth KaBOOM! playground build and $250,000 to the Billings Clinic Foundation to help sustain Montana's first-ever psychiatry residency.
We also lead with our values in every part of our business. We celebrate and foster diversity and inclusion, for example, because our diverse workforce makes us stronger and helps us meet the needs of our members and communities.
We'll share stories about these efforts here as we put our purpose into action.
