Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Montana Medicare Drug Plan Earns Highest 5-Star Quality Rating

Nov. 07, 2014

Helena, MT — Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Montana is proud to announce that MedicareBlueSM Rx (PDP), a Medicare prescription drug plan covering over 300,000 members, received a 5-Star Rating*, the highest rating awarded by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS). CMS' Star Rating represents a comprehensive assessment of health plan performance and quality. It was also named one of the "Best Medicare Part D Plans" for 2015 by U.S. News & World Report (October 15, 2014).

"Having access to an affordable, high quality product throughout the year is an incredible opportunity for Medicare beneficiaries," said Deborah Madson, CEO of the Northern Plains Alliance, the alliance of six independent Blue Cross and Blue Shield plans in seven states that offer MedicareBlue Rx. "We are delighted to achieve this exceptional performance again."

MedicareBlue Rx is one of only three Medicare Part D prescription drug plans in the United States to receive 5 out of 5 Stars for 2015 and is the only 5-Star plan in the seven-state region. MedicareBlue Rx has received a 5-Star Rating four of the five years CMS has awarded Stars. Five-Star plans are permitted to offer a special continual enrollment period, letting those eligible to enroll in the plan year round.

The Star Rating system is designed to provide consumers with additional information to help them choose Medicare coverage from among the plans offered in their area. Plans are rated on the results of several quality measures, such as access to care, responsiveness and customer satisfaction. Each plan receives a score for the plans overall performance which is a measure of a plan's overall quality. Plans with 5 Stars represent "excellent performance."

All scores are posted online at www.Medicare.gov  and are released to coincide with Medicare's annual open enrollment period, which runs from October 15 to December 7.
