Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Montana Supports Health of Crow Nation Through Basketball Tournament
Basketball is a big part of the culture of Montana’s Crow Nation. Generations of youth begin playing basketball at an early age.
Making the Health Care System Work , our online magazine, features a relationship with Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Montana (BCBSMT) and the Crow Nation Head Start program. BCBSMT supplied basketballs, hoops and T-shirts for a youth tournament sponsored annually by the Head Start program.
BCBSMT’s relationship with tribal leaders has yielded new opportunities to expand access to preventive services.
“It isn’t just about providing basketball hoops and equipment for their wellness program. It’s really about developing those relationships for future partnerships,” says Randi Heigh, Public Relations Coordinator.
Kamille Kirchberg, a specialist with the BCBSMT Care Van program, says the relationship allowed them to bring free immunizations and other health services to the tribe. “We found this unexpected need for additional services that the Care Van can provide,” she says. “We’re really excited to bring the Care Van back and continue to improve their health care outcomes.”
