HELENA, Montana — The state’s largest and longest-standing health insurer is celebrating its 85th anniversary. Through the years, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Montana has consistently pursued its mission to enhance the health and well-being of Montanans through innovative products, robust services and programs, and community investment.
BCBSMT currently employs more than 500 people who serve more than 300,000 members throughout the state. In 2024 alone, it contributed more than $1 million in grants and sponsorships to local community organizations.

Historical overview:
- The Hospital Service Association (Blue Cross) started in 1940 and the Montana Physicians Service (Blue Shield) formed in 1946.
- The two companies partnered from 1946 until 1952.
- In 1986, Blue Cross of Montana was formed and the two companies merged to become Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Montana.
