BCBSMT to Launch Epic’s Platform to Improve Provider Experience

New technology will enhance exchange of health data to empower patients and providers, improve quality of care and lower health care costs.


Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Montana (BCBSMT) is launching a new health information platform through Epic. The Payer Platform creates a two-way exchange of information at the point of care between BCBSMT and our network providers who use Epic electronic health record (EHR) system.

The new platform is the result of an agreement with Epic, one of the first of its kind. The platform is designed to improve the delivery of care to patients and improve physicians’ interactions with patients.

Who can use the Payer Platform?

The Payer Platform will launch later this year in a phased approach with providers who are Epic customers.

How does this benefit providers?

This platform focuses on strengthening the collaboration among patients, BCBSMT and providers to reduce administrative burden and ultimately help lower costs.

The agreement with Epic will establish a secure Payer Platform to:

  • Review patient data including:
    • Medical records
    • Emergency room visits
    • Diagnostic evaluations
    • Lab results
    • Claims
  • Streamline administrative processes such as:
    • Health data acquisition (e.g., medical records, ADT’s)
    • Improved automation for prior authorizations
    • Delivery of insights at the point of care
  • Facilitate a care management strategy and identify gaps in care to help our members:
    • Make smart care choices
    • Reduce personal health care costs
