Providers with Unused Record IDs May Be Terminated from Networks

March 5, 2026

A provider record ID is a unique identifier with Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Montana that corresponds to a billing or rendering National Provider Identifier and Tax Identification Number.

No change to billing: The record ID isn't required on claim submissions. Continue to bill claims with your billing or rendering NPI and TIN.

When record IDs aren’t used: If you haven’t filed a claim with your billing or rendering NPI and TIN with a date of service within 24 months, we may cancel your corresponding record ID. If you are terminated from networks associated with this record ID, we will send a certified letter providing 90-day notice that you will be terminated. If you receive this letter, you can contact us to cancel the termination.

If you want to keep your record ID active: File claims under your billing or rendering NPI and TIN within 24-month periods.

To apply to reinstate a canceled record ID: Complete the provider onboarding form.
