Medical Policy Reminder Regarding Robotic Assistance In Surgery
The Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Montana (BCBSMT) Commercial medical policy Endoscopic, Arthroscopic, Laparoscopic, and Thoracroscopic Surgery SUR701.014 contains criteria that explains robotic assistance is not considered medically necessary. "The surgical instruments, devices and adjuncts a surgeon selects for performing a surgical procedure are regarded as integral to achieving a successful outcome for that procedure. Robotic assistance, as an adjunct to the primary procedure, is considered not medically necessary."
