Important Benefits Change

We’d like to highlight some important benefits information to help you make the most of your Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Montana plan.

Get to Know Your Plan’s Network

Your plan has a network of providers that includes doctors, hospitals and other types of facilities. Your plan will pay at the highest benefit level if you stay in the plan’s network, helping you save. There are a few ways to find out if your doctor or other provider is in network:

  • Log in to your member account and search under “Find Care."
  • Download BCBSMT app. Start by visitng our App Details page or text BCBSMTAPP to 33633.*
  • Call Customer Service at the number on your member ID card.

You’ll need your member ID from your member ID card to activate your account if you haven’t yet done so.

What Is Changing?

Non-emergency, non-urgent care outside Montana and the counties that border it is only available if the service isn't available in your plan’s service area.

If non-urgent or non-emergency care isn’t available in your plan’s service area, you’ll need an approved waiver from BCBSMT before you receive the care:

  • From a provider outside Montana or the counties that border MontanaThis includes both in-network and out-of-network providers.
  • From out-of-network providers in contiguous counties.

You must have requested and received an approved waiver before getting care for your benefits to apply. If you don’t get a waiver before getting care, it will not be approved. You'll be responsible for the full costs. A waiver will be denied if the service is available in Montana or from a provider in network with a Blue Cross and Blue Shield Plan in its contiguous counties. You may be redirected to available, local in-network services.

To ask for a waiver, call Customer Service at the number on your member ID card. The waiver will need to be approved before you receive care.

If you're facing a medical emergency, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room.

Please refer to this page's Answers to Questions You May Have section to find what counties border (are contiguous to) Montana and for additional information on out-of-service-area waivers and how to obtain a waiver.

Remember:

Out-of-state care beyond the border counties is not covered, unless you obtain an out-of-service area waiver. A waiver for otherwise covered services will be approved only if the services are not available in the plan’s service area. A waiver will be denied if adequate care is available in Montana or its border counties. You may be redirected to available, local in-network services.

If you do not receive the appropriate waiver in advance, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Montana will not pay the claim.

As always, if you are facing a medical emergency call 911 or proceed to the nearest emergency room.
